The greatest joy
When have you felt at your best?
Life throws us many different experiences—some good, some more challenging—but at some point, we have all felt joyful.
Our greatest joy can be felt when we are most in line with our higher selves. This happens when we are working for God, serving others or when we reach a spiritual goal.
Dr. King said in an address from 1979:
“It’s a certain fact that if one works for God, in any way, that one can experience what I call the “special” feeling. Not a feeling of being fully content with what they’re doing, not a feeling of complacency, but a feeling above any other feeling: a feeling of accomplishment. A warm feeling which strikes deep into one’s heart.”
Spiritual service can feel thankless. We say a prayer for someone, or to help in a particular situation, and we often don’t know the direct result of our prayer.
But it is nevertheless helping, and when we have full faith in what we do, we can start to feel this deep feeling of accomplishment, knowing that we’ve done something truly worthwhile.
He goes on to say:
“You have to watch one point, though, that you’re never fully satisfied with what you have done.
You can always push the machine—and that’s what you’re residing in—a little further. And the more you do, the better investment you make in the karmic bank, the interest of which you will definitely draw—must draw by Law—either in this life or the next. The karmic bank, you know, you can take the capital with you.”
It’s a win-win situation. The more we work with God, the more we feel this deep sense of spiritual accomplishment, and the more we will be able to continue doing so in the future.
Something you can try
We are not always mindful of how we feel. We are busy with our day to day activities. So for the next couple of weeks, try to be present in your feelings. Notice how you are feeling and what brings you joy.
This way when you do feel this great spiritual accomplishment feeling, it won’t go unnoticed. Have you ever had a feeling like Dr. King described? Please feel free to share it with me.
