Finding your path
It can be difficult to find the time for spirituality.
We have many responsibilities in our lives. Between work, family and looking after ourselves it can feel like we are inundated with commitments.
But our spiritual path is the most important journey we take. While it is important to meet our responsibilities, it is just as important to find time to evolve ourselves.
It’s the reason we are here on Earth.
In an address entitled “The Spiritual Path is the Most Important Thing in Your Life,” Dr. George King said:
“We have to, I think, learn to put things in their right order of importance, and the spiritual things in life must – come – first; and everything else—all the other responsibilities, all the other demands on our time, and our effort, and our energies—must come second to that, no matter what those demands are and who they come from.”
Dr. King isn’t saying we need to cut ourselves off from everything else in our lives, it’s just about understanding our priorities.
The demands of work and family, for example, need to be balanced against time for our spiritual growth and service to others.
Having a successful career can be a really positive thing, but many use work as a distraction from living a spiritual life. They spend so much time working, focusing on materialistic goals, that they do not have any time left for spirituality.
It’s good to be successful, in whatever we do, but we should not let our lives in the material world overshadow our spiritual growth.

I remember one time I was driving to a friend’s house a little over an hour away from me. I was in college at the time and thinking a lot about what my future was going to be like.
I was driving through a residential area and I was stopped at a light in front of a small house. I saw two cars in the driveway and it looked like the TV was on. It looked as though a couple lived in this home. I imagined that they both worked that day, came home and were relaxing in front of the TV, watching their favorite show. Relaxing before the next day.
I wondered if this was what I was working towards – going to my job in the day and relaxing at home with my family in the evening.
I wondered if this was all there was to life. Surely the reason we were put on this Earth was not just to fall into a cycle of work, relaxation, and sleep…
That didn’t feel like the life for me. I could see that there would be some level of accomplishment and happiness, but it wasn’t the life I was looking for.
It wasn’t long after this experience that I began to actively seek out a different kind of life. A more spiritual one.
Something you can try
“Have faith, work at your spiritual exercises as never before – not forgetting that real prayer, coming from an unselfish heart, is one of the greatest of these exercises and your very presence will give comfort to the weary and healing to the sick.”
Dr. King
Starting new habits is not easy, so it’s best to start small. Something that you can relatively easily achieve and fit into your life.
Try adding in just one prayer to your day. Do it at the same time each day, whatever time suits you. In the next two weeks, try to say this each day.
You can try this with “The New Lord’s Prayer.” This is an excellent prayer given by the Master Jesus. Dr. King also gave a lecture on this prayer which unpacks the meaning behind it.
Let me know the effect saying this prayer has on you.
